Hallowed
Walls
(Louisiana Contractor, July 2002
issue) There's no
doubt about it. The new sound barriers being constructed along stretches of I-10
and I-12 in Baton Rouge and I-10 in New Orleans are as eye-catching as they are
functional, but are they structurally sound or merely attractive buffers between
the would-be sleepy residential communities and the constant noise of modern

2002 ACI
Best Concrete Project Award for Highways and Bridges
Concrete Impressions of Louisiana, a
Boykin Brothers, Inc. majority owned company received the honor from ACI,
Louisiana for the Sound Barrier project along interstates I-10 and I-12
in Baton Rouge, La. The sound barriers are comprised of a series
of walls - each constructed of a number of panels that slide into grooved
columns placed 25 ft. apart. The walls average 24 ft. in height and are made
of two, 12-foot panels that range in thickness from 5 ¾ to 6 ¾ inches.
Although residential areas adjacent to state highways will benefit from the
noise buffer provided by the walls, the surface artwork is what attracts most
motorists' attention.Louisiana Contractor's Best of 2002
